Information for Philadelphia Area Drivers

In October 1997, Pennsylvania upgraded the Vehicle Emissions Inspection and Maintenance Program, operating since 1984, as part of an overall plan to bring cleaner air to Pennsylvania.

Motorists helped design the program with driver convenience in mind. Private garages do both tests and repairs annually, just like the safety inspection. The safety and emissions test will continue to be done at the same time and at fees set by competition.
